Help Getting started and windows
Checking for updates
bonSQL can tell you when a newer version is on bonsql.org. It never downloads or installs anything: it reads one small file from the website, compares the version in it with its own, and opens the download page in your browser if you ask it to.
Checking by hand
Help > Check for Updates… opens a window, reads the file and shows one of:
- bonSQL x is up to date.
- bonSQL y is available, released date. You have x. with a line about what is new. Open download page takes you to the download page; Skip this version stops the weekly check mentioning y again (a later version will still be mentioned).
- Could not check for updates: … when the site cannot be reached; the download page button still works.
The weekly check
Tick Check for new versions once a week in the window, or on the General page of Preferences. It is off unless you turn it on. When it is on, bonSQL reads the file at most once every seven days, when it starts, and only opens the window if there is a newer version you have not skipped. Nothing appears when you are up to date.
What is sent
A plain request for the file over HTTPS, with the program name as the user agent. No version number, no identifier, no settings, nothing about your servers. The web server sees what it sees for any visit: your address and the time.
